131: The First Atari 2600 Homebrew Cartridge? Ed Federmeyer And The Story of Sound-X and Edtris

This one was a labor of love of sorts. About 4 weeks ago, I did not even know Ed Federmeyer existed. But after a I did a deep dive into Atari 2600 Action Pack For Windows and found out he had found a way to use it for his own homebrew back 1995, I was intrigued. I then discovered that Ed had created some homebrew Atari 2600 games. After doing some research on the usenet archive for rec.games.video.classic I realized, Ed might have created the first homebrew video game.

After that I tracked down Ed through the customer server email of a website I believed was his, and he answered. Ed was only too happy to respond and to do this interview. The rest is in the video.

Show notes:

In the 1994, when retro gaming wasn’t even really a thing yet, Ed Federmeyer decided he wanted to make his own Atari 2600 software. His drive to actually bring this dream to fruition may have sparked the modern are of retro games. Includes a new 2025 interview with Ed Federmeyer.

Another triumph. Your interviews with the creators of my favorite GCC games, and now with Mr. Federmeyer, this previously mysterious and enigmatic legend of homemade games, have been windfalls for the collective knowledge of game history among us fellow fanatics of the classics.

Your modesty aside, you’re doing absolutely crucial work. As just one guy among those who have been listening since the beginning, THANK YOU for undertaking so much research and interview “field work.” And besides that, your discussions about the games, stories of significant events in your lives, and hypothetical ventures Into the Vertical Blank are a lot of fun!

I always look forward to the next installment, and I’m obviously not alone there. Thanks for keeping it up!
