Flash Game Development Inter-web Mash-up: August 8, 2008

A selection blogs, articles, tutorials, games, and more that might be on interest to Flash game developers (or any other game developers).

This time we take look at a smattering of news and happenings in the Flash Game World: An early look Gamingyourway.com’s latest brace; N+ goes the way of the hand-held; The XPoser contest; a new game that uses our music loops; Game Jacket and Mochi updates; A new Terry Paton Arcade game; The Atari 800 gaming platform.

I have been basically out of commission for a week. My new son was born last week and quickly sent to the ICU for newborns because he was having trouble breathing. The doctors and especially the nurses at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, CA did an absolutely fantastic job. My son came home on Tuesday and it has been late late late nights all week. We are back to a relatively normal schedule now (sleeping is not actually happening though), so I am ready to get back to some of my 8bitrocket duties. I have many emails piled up, and so many great things are going on in the community that I am anxious to get back to reporting on it all for you guys.

News and other stuff
One of the landmark games in the relatively short history of Flash games is N (By Metanet’s Raigan Burns and Mare Sheppard). It’s new home is Wayoftheninja.org. The hand-held console version of this Lode Runner inspired action puzzler will be released August 26th. It will cost the $19.99 and already have one on order at my local shop!

8bitrocket good friends, Squize and nGFX have been on fire over the last week with an early mix of ORBS (which is going up in our retro showcase if we have any say in the matter =) and the continuing tease of nGFX’s latest arcade/puzzle masterpiece. Orbs gives Geometry Wars 2 a run for it’s money. Nice work, Squize! I haven’t been able to try nGFX’s latest, but it LOOKS outstanding.

The XPOSER contest in its final days, so go there and submit your games. The final day to compete for $18k in cash and prizes is TOMORROW! All entries must include the XPOSER game upload toolkit.

Alaskagameworks.com’s Microbe is a new game that features 8bitrocket produced music clips. In this cool little action puzzler, your task is to grab food before the amoeba bacteria does. If the amoebas touch you, you are dead!

GameJacket.com has upgraded its server architecture and adding new features. It was down for a couple days but seems to be back up now. They still have a $.50 guaranteed CPM and provide central hosting and other features. They are a decent alternative to Mochi and will help promote your games for you.

Not to be out done, Mochiads has a new deserving $100 winner this week in Globs. Attempt to fill all of the globs with the same color by clicking (or pressing 1-6) the colors at the top of the screen. You get more points the fewer moves you need. It’s great fun! Great job, Jacksmack!

Terry Paton’s Jump and Smash! has been taking up a lot of my nonexistent free time lately. It is an AWESOME Lego inspired action game where you must jump your way across the play field crushing all manner of Lego brick built baddies.

Bill Loguidice and Matt Barton (from the great retro site Armchair Arcade) out do themselves with coverage of my favorite gaming platform of all time, Atari 8-bit computers.

That’s it for tonight. Tomorrow I will hit the other blog and game sites for a full review of more of the latest zarjaz!
